InStyle magazine’s 2018 February issue declared red and denim as a Combo to Try so you know what happened next…of course I had to try it! The color red has been dominating the fashion world since fall 2017 and I really wanted to try out a look. But here’s the thing, red makes me kind of nervous if it’s not on my lips or feet. Normally wearing red just isn’t my thing but I thought I’d give this combo a try since there’s denim involved. Before we get into the combo and other ways to wear this years it color, I thought it would be fitting to talk about the power of red.
One thing about the color red, it never goes unnoticed. Perhaps that is because it can represent so many different emotions. We see red when we’re pissed off. We slow down when we encounter a red warning or stop sign. Cheeks turn red from excitement and passion. Some of these same emotions are raised at times when someone walks into a room wearing all red. It’s a very impactful entrance. I can’t talk about red without sharing my first experience with the color that left an impression on me for years to come.
One Sunday morning, back when I was in high school I got ready for church and came downstairs to wait for my mother. When she came down she looked at me and said “you can’t wear that”. I asked her “why not “ and she said “you’re wearing ALL RED!”. Now, I know what you are probably thinking, ALL RED…why the heck would she wear all red to church? Remember, I was in high school so I may have been having an adolescent moment…who knows. Nonetheless, I had carefully put my all red look together and I was proud of it so I was not thrilled that my mother felt otherwise. She explained to me that red was not an “appropriate” color to wear to church. We went back and forth and eventually I ended up changing of course but I always felt like a rebel every time I wore red after that happened.
Go Ahead, Be A Rebel
Today, I don’t exactly hesitate anymore when I think about wearing a red lip but this trend has made me rethink my stance on buying red clothes. Red is so unconventional but you have to admit it feels good to go against the norm. So go ahead and wear that red pant suit to work. Put on those red lips and go to church. Own more than one or two pairs of red pumps! Life is short and you should wear whatever color you want to, whenever you want to wear it. Okay, so now that we’re wearing red how are we wearing it? There are TONS of ways to wear this jaw dropping color. Grab something to take some notes and read on!

Ways to Rock Red
- On the Bottom or Top
If you’re not quite ready yet to go bold and wear red all over then try a statement top or bottom. It will add just the right amount of spice.
- All Over
If you don’t mind being gawked at then all red is the way to go. Strut your stuff and make me and yourself proud.
- With Denim or Leather
Pairing red with denim is another way to spice up a casual tried and true favorite. Leather also adds another level of edginess when worn together with red.
- In Patterns
Wearing red patterns is a great way to express your personality as well as wear the color in a less obvious way.
- Red with Pink
At first thought this combo seems wrong but when you see them together it’s oh so right. Try a pastel pink with red. You’ll be right on time for Valentine’s Day.
- Red Accessories
Not sure about wearing red? How about some fierce red pumps? A red clutch or crossbody handbag would even be enough to add a nice pop to your look. And don’t forget, a red lippie is an accessory too!
A red coat is the ULTIMATE fashion statement. Most of us buy safe colors (e.g., black, brown, tan) when choosing outerwear. A red coat says, you dare me…I double dare you!
